About the Design
The design grew out of several conversations I had with the director about the tone she wanted to convey to the audience. I often will sketch while talking to a director just in case we can find the design in the moment, and that was the case with Lauren Gunderson's excellent play. We were looking over research images of installation art work and the red color just kept coming back. The guillotines were always present, looming, and interactive. Actors would constantly refer to them, or play off of them in the performance in a way that could range from unsettling to playful. The color palette also served as reference to the revolution and was complimented in the costume design.
